We are delighted to introduce our Astronomer in Residence: Dr Stephen Wilkins.
Stephen is Head of Astronomy at the University of Sussex and our inaugural astronomer in residence here at the Observatory Science Centre. Stephen grew up in Yorkshire before studying at the University of Durham and the University of Cambridge. He then worked as a researcher at the University of Oxford before moving to the University of Sussex a decade ago.
Stephen’s research concerns the formation of the first stars and galaxies. He uses a combination of space telescopes, including Hubble and JWST, and super-computer simulations to understand this critical period of the Universe’s history.
Stephen is also passionately committed to communicating science to the public. He currently holds an STFC Public Engagement Fellowship and has established a science education charity in Sussex.
As Astronomer in Residence Stephen provides scientific input to the Observatory’s programme and will deliver several lectures each year, including at the long running Astronomy Festival.
