In the 1950s this site was specifically chosen to be the new home of The Royal Greenwich Observatory: set in the midst of the Sussex countryside, away from light pollution with the dark skies that were perfect for astronomers. Sadly in modern times, it cannot be readily accessed by public transport.
The estate entrance is over 3 miles from the village of Herstmonceux along fast lanes, without footpaths: if using public transport please consider how you will complete / return your journey.
The nearest mainline train station is Polegate where taxis are available.
The nearest main buses will stop in Hailsham and a taxi is then required.
The Cuckmere Bus operates some rural services.
Cyclists can travel across the picturesque Pevensey Levels from Pevensey railway station. The route is very flat with only 1 hill at Wartling - journey time varies from 25 - 45 minutes depending on pedal power and wind direction!
Service 49 links The Observatory Science Centre to Pevensey and Eastbourne via the Seafront, Langney Shops, Westham and Wartling.
The bus will drop off / pick up immediately outside our reception and enables visitors without their own transport to visit this fantastic attraction.
Please check Cuckmere Buses website for details of this service:
