On the morning of Saturday 29 March there will be a partial solar eclipse visible from the UK.
We are expecting several amateur astronomers to join us with their solar telescopes to witness this event.
You should never look directly at the Sun as it will blind you but our volunteers will be bringing their own specialist solar telescopes as well as looking after The Centre's 90mm solar telescope and Sunspotters. These telescopes have special solar filters which filter out the harmful radiation from the Sun so you can actually look at it directly and very safely. Dont miss this fabulous opportunity!
The timings are as follows:
10am: Gates open to The Centre
10.07: the partial eclipse begins
11.03: Maximum eclipse (almost 31% of the Sun is obscured)
12.00: eclipse end
To find out why a solar eclipse occurs see Solar Eclipse in our astronomy glossary.
The next solar eclipse will be on 12 August 2026 when about 90% of the Sun will be obscured.
